Carrer de l’Hospital, 29
Mataró Hospital is one of the oldest institutions in the city. Its foundation dates back to the Middle Ages. Since then, however, its main site has changed several times. First it was where the City Hall is now; then it moved here, to Carrer Hospital, and is currently on Carretera de Cirera, over the motorway, again outside the boundaries of the city of twenty-one.
The first building of the Hospital de Sant Jaume i Santa Magdalena came into operation in 1646, when the increase in population made it necessary to move the sick outside the walls. The site chosen, thanks to a legacy from Mosen Jaume Sala, was an area of orchards and farmhouses.
The construction you can see today, though highly transformed, is basically that of the eighteenth century. The façade is very austere, only the neoclassical access portal stands out. The church is the most interesting building in the complex. The temple has a single nave, covered with a vault and an undulating façade decorated with sgraffito. The cloister remains in its original state.
