Carrer d’en Palau, 32
In this same square, you can see two examples of the refurbishment of historic buildings now turned into cultural facilities: Can Serra, which houses Mataró Museum, and Can Palauet. Can Palauet is a typical Baroque construction and was the ancestral home of the Palau family from at least the 15th century.
The building was rebuilt in the 1990’s because Mataró City Hall put it out to new uses. However, from the first period we still have the large windows on the façade and part of the cellar. On the first floor there are some noble rooms with allegorical murals, but from the 19th century.
If you are a lover of romantic history, this house held great parties for the crème de la crème of the time. For example, the chapel of Can Palauet in 1626 was venue to the marriage of Luís de Haro, nephew of the Count Duke of Olivares – Prime Minister of Felipe V -, and Catalina de Córdoba, daughter of the Dukes of Cardona.
Since 1996, the building has housed the Municipal Archive, the Maresme County Archive and an Exhibition Hall of Mataró City Council.
