Muralla de Sant Llorenç, 15
The Residence of Sant Josep is the only project in Mataró by Eduard Ferrés i Puig, the author of several buildings on the Gran Via and the famous ‘El Siglo’ stores on Carrer Pelai in Barcelona. His works stand astride modernism and noucentisme.
From modernism, Ferrés i Puig uses the combination of different building materials. And from noucentisme, the imitation of the architectural forms and the neoclassical compositions.
The Residence of Sant Josep was built between 1906 and 1912. Today it is an old people’s home, but it was initially used as a school.
It is a three-story building of constructive symmetry and a square floor plan, with large windows. The main entrance is protected by a porch with parabolic arches and a large balcony decorated with glazed ceramics. And the façades are decorated with a sgraffito that reproduces several floral motifs.
